We believe the Bible is the only authoritative source for practicing God's will. Here are some of the basic teachings we follow at Charles Town.

No creed other than the Bible.

  • II Timothy 3:16-17 The Scriptures furnish a man unto all good works.
  • II Peter 1:3 It gives all things that pertain unto life and godliness.
  • The New Testament was the apostles' creed.
  • The churches of the New Testament were governed without human creeds. The same should be done now.

Speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent.

  • II Peter 4:11, It speaks as the oracles of God.
  • II Timothy 1:13, It holds fast the form of sound words.
  • Galatians 1:9, It teaches nothing as doctrine that the apostles did not preach.
  • We must teach and practice all the truth: nothing more nothing less.
  • II John 9, We are not to go beyond the truth as revealed in the New Testament.

We plead for the unity of all believers in Christ upon the basis
of the Word of God and the one Body.

  • John 17:20-21, Jesus prayed for all to be one.
  • I Corinthians 1:10, Paul pleaded for us to "all speak the same thing".
  • Ephesians 4:4-7, There is one body and the body is the church.
  • Acts 2:47, Its members are in no organization other than the one to which the Lord adds the saved.

Worship in the pattern established in the New Testament.

  • John 4:24, "in spirit" (with sincerity) and "in truth" (as the word of God directs)
  • We oppose all items of worship not authorized in the New Testament.
  • Matthew 15:9, The unauthorized is vain worship.
  • Acts 2:42, the Church is to continue steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine.
  • The worship of the early church consisted of:
    1. Singing- Ephesians 5:19; Hebrews 2:12 & 13:15 Giving- I Corinthians 16:1-2; II Corinthians 9:7 Teaching/preaching - Acts 20:7 Lord's supper - Acts 20:7; I Corinthians 11:23-30
    2. Praying - on the first day of the week - Acts 2:42

Wear the name of Christ and opposes all names of man's invention.

  • Acts 11:26 & 26:28; I Peter 4:16, called Christians.
  • Acts 4:12; Philippians 3:16, All to wear the same name as the Bible speaks.
  • I Corinthians 1:10-13; 3:3-4; 4:6 condemns wearing human names.

The Apostolic teachings in the New Testament set forth the structure
for the Church under Christ as the head, with Elders and Deacons
to serve in the local congregation.

  • Acts 20:28, Elders to oversee the church.
  • Acts 14:23, Ordained Elders in every church.
  • Philippians 1:1; I Timothy 3:1-13, Elders/Bishops and Deacons.
  • The Lord's church is not run by a majority rule or by popes, councils, conferences, synods, etc., but as its only head, Christ, dictates through His word.

The Gospel as revealed and confirmed by the Holy Spirit is able
to convert sinners and bring them to salvation.

  • Romans 1:16, The gospel is the power of God unto salvation.
  • I Corinthians 15:2, We are saved by the gospel.
  • James 1:18, We are begotten by the Word of Truth.
  • Romans 10:17, Faith comes by hearing the Word of God.
  • John 17:17, We are sanctified through the truth.

The Bible teaches sinners how through faith to obtain God's merciful salvation.

  • Romans 10:17; Acts 16:31, Hear the gospel and believe.
  • Acts 3:19 & 17:30-31, They must repent .
  • Romans 10:9-10; Acts 8:37, They must confess Christ with the mouth.
  • Acts 2:38 & 22:16; Mark 16:16; 1 Peter 3:20-21, They must be baptized for the remission of sins.

Facts about baptism.

  • Mark 16:16 1 Peter 3:21, You are saved from sins.
  • Acts 2:38, You have remission of sins.
  • Acts 22:16; Hebrews 9:22; Hebrews 10:22; 1 Peter 3:21, Sins are washed away by the blood of Christ.
  • 1 Corinthians 12:13; Acts 2:41,47, You enter into the church.
  • Galatians 3:26-27; Romans 6:3-4, You enter into Christ.
  • Galatians 3:26-27, You put on Christ and become a child of God.
  • Romans 6:3-4; 2 Corinthians 5:17, You are born again, a new creature.
  • Romans 6:3-6, You walk in newness of life.
  • Mark 16:15-16; Acts 10:48; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9, You obey Christ.
  • Romans 6:3-4; Colossians 2:12, A burial in water.

  • John 3:3-5; Romans 6:3-6, A birth.
  • Acts 22:16; Hebrews 10:22, A washing.

The Bible teaches Christians to remain faithful to Christ,
the head of the Church, lest they fall and be lost.

  • John 15:1-8, Unfruitful branches are to be cast into fire and burned. Hebrews 6:4-8, It is possible to "fall away".
  • Revelation 2:10, Be faithful.
